NC KOMEN ADVOCACY ALLIANCE

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Advocacy Alliance is the nonpartisan voice of the 2.5 million breast cancer survivors and the people who love them. Our mission is to translate Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever into action at all levels of government to discover and deliver the cures.

Each year, Komen has a “Lobby Day” in Washington, DC. Representatives from Affiliates around the country wear pink and descend on the nation’s capital to meet with their states’ Members of Congress. This year, our focus was on improving access to screening, especially for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, enabling innovations in screening technology, delivering on the promise of health care reform (protections for pre-existing conditions, out-of-pocket expenses, patient navigation, clinical trials and breast health education for young women ages 40-49). For more information about advocacy, click here.

A NC Advocacy Alliance was started more than a year ago, led by Neel Stallings of Komen Charlotte and Nadine Barrett of Komen NC Triangle, with all NC Affiliates represented. Other members of the Komen Charlotte Advocacy Alliance include:

  • Mary Boyd, a survivor and former lobbyist and media director for Duke Energy (formally Duke Power)
  • Kim Kogut, Komen Charlotte board member
  • Gloria Scienski, Komen Charlotte Executive Director

We urge you to support our mission by becoming an Online Advocate. By doing so, you will help translate the Komen promise into government action to discover and deliver the cures. You will also receive occasional requests to take action on important state and federal issues. YOUR INFORMATION IS COMPLETELY CONFIDENTIAL AND WILL NOT BE SHARED WITH ANYONE.

 KOMEN SPOTLIGHT

Congratulations to Mary Geneva Brackett, for being named as the AMG Diversity Champion with Wells Fargo!

The company describes Diversity Champions as employees “who actively champion and visibly embrace and celebrate diversity in the workplace by helping others understand and value similarities and differences.”

Mary Geneva Brackett, Intermediary Account Manager with Wells Fargo, has been recognized  for her proactive efforts to create awareness of cancer within her co-workers and community. She has actively participated in many community events, such as Race for the Cure—for which her team raised more than $13,000. In addition, Mary Geneva mentors and educates women about the strength it takes to face cancer or any challenge in one’s life. Mary Geneva’s determination, positive attitude and message of awareness have helped people understand that although the battle with cancer may change a person physically, their spirit and sense of self is still intact. Her journey is an inspiration.

Team Healing Dragons will be featured on WBTV News TONIGHT, Wednesday, July 21st, at 6:00 pm. Molly Grantham stopped by Lake

Norman and paddled with the Dragon Boat crew, which consists of cancer survivors, as well as their family and friends. Team Healing

Dragons also participates every year in Race for the Cure.

Do you know a komen supporter who deserves to be recognized for special accomplishments? We would love to feature her in our

Survivor Spotlight! Send any nominations to
r.mcgrath@komencharlotte.org.

CALLING ALL COMMUNITY CHORAL SINGERS!

Sing for the Cure is a narrated song cycle. With text based on the true stories of breast cancer survivors and their caregivers, the music for the 10 choral numbers was written by different composers, so as the moods and messages shift, so do the musical styles. This powerful piece offers an incredible cathartic experience for both performers and audience members, expressing the fear, the courage, the humor and the hope we all need in the face of cancer.
