Many of these organizations have been receiving Komen funding for multiple years. The use of compression bandages and sleeves is crucial to the long term management of lymphedema. ACT-UP is a program offered by the Comprehensive Lymphedema Management Program at Carolinas Rehabilitation - Main.

Presbyterian Cancer center
Screening, diagnostics, genetic testing, & breast health outreach
13 year recipient
To provide screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, and ultrasound-guided breast biopsies to medically underserved women, particularly minorities. Also provide genetic testing and counseling for one uninsured woman. All women identified in this project will receive culturally-appropriate breast health education using Komen materials. An interpreter will be provided as needed.

R.O.S.E. Project (Reaching Our Sisters through Education)

To promote breast health initiatives for African American and underserved women in the Greater Charlotte Metropolitan region, particularly between the ages of 15-55. Utilizes education and volunteerism by African American breast cancer survivors to address and eliminate the racial and ethnic disparities related to a diagnosis of breast cancer in the African American community. Project consists of the Pink Ribbon door-to-door campaign/health fair, which targets an underserved community and Community Education & Youth Initiative.

Supports outreach, advocacy, education, and screening services for all women in Cabarrus County with special emphasis on low income and minority women (African American and Latino). Three main goals: (1) to provide comprehensive breast health care for the underserved / minority women who do not qualify for other means of assistance through free mammography screening and diagnostic follow up (2) to provide individualized patient navigation to all women and men at high risk for, being diagnosed with, receiving treatment for, or in recovery from breast cancer (3) to provide education and outreach activities in our community to support the early detection of breast cancer.

To create and promote Breast Cancer education and awareness in girls ages 5-17 and their families, troop leaders and mentors in an active, educational and non-threatening manner. In 2011, Scouting for the Cure events will serve 2,000 girls and adults, with a special emphasis on girls taking part in our outreach initiative – focusing on increasing participation among girls living in at-risk environments, rural communities and underserved or emerging populations.

To provide screening mammograms, as well as a limited number of diagnostic tests, for health department patients through the grant. Focus on breast health education for African American and Hispanic women. Education and assistance is available to all women residing in Union County by means of community-based education through church, civic, or workplace groups. Program offering education, screening and treatment to uninsured women in Stanly County. In collaboration with the Stanly County Health Department and Community Care Clinic, reach out to all women in Stanly County through educational presentations to businesses, organizations and community groups. During October and May, additional marketing to increase awareness of Project CURE through newspaper articles and flyers in physician offices. Panel cards distributed to women throughout the county with info about Project CURE and self breast exams all year.

Lymphedema Program and Healthy Living Education
7 year RECIPIENT
Provide supplies for lymphedema treatment to uninsured or undersinsured patients, and support quarterly “Lymphedema Risk Reduction” education class facilitated by Nurse Navigator and Lymphedema therapist. Healthy Living program will provide a monthly educational opportunity for breast cancer survivors who live in rural communities to learn about follow-up care, physical activity, nutrition, and complementary therapies.

Promotes education and awareness of breast cancer and reduces the cost and burden of treatment for uninsured or underinsured breast cancer patients in Gaston and Lincoln counties. Targets mass population as well as specific underserved groups to address significant needs in education and treatment of breast cancer. Provides education programs to 9th grade students in Gaston County Schools. Provides minority churches and community groups with education programs, including Pink Sunday in the month of April. Provides aid to underinsured or uninsured breast cancer patients through assistance with breast cancer-related prescriptions and necessary non-prescription medical items.

Program will provide lymphedema supplies and support for breast cancer patients with lymphedema, and will develop an educational notebook to provide breast information and resources individualized to the patient’s continuum of treatment.

FIRST YEAR RECIPIENT
To partner with free clinics, community agencies and churches to provide screening and culturally appropriate education to 100 uninsured women, 75% of whom will be minority women, largely from the Hispanic population. Will also provide 10 diagnostic mammograms to women called back from screenings or who present with a lump or breast problem and 2 ultra-sound guided biopsies.

To provide screening mammograms, diagnostics and ultrasound-guided biopsies to poor, uninsured women in the greater Matthews area including Mecklenburg and Union counties. Will include breast health education for the women in the screening program using Komen materials. Will partner with the Matthews Free Clinic, the Matthews Help Center, the Union County Health Department and various churches to refer women into this program.

Stanly Regional Medical Center – Edema Management Center 1
Project Lymph-E.D.E.M.A. (Education, Detection, Evaluation, Management,Awareness)
FIRST YEAR RECIPIENT
To ensure that patients with breast cancer related lymphedema are aware that treatment is available and will not be excluded from treatment because of an inability to afford the compression products necessary for treatment. Educational activities include lecture series given by certified lymphedema therapist, distribution of written literature to the community, and one-on-one instruction with patients. Through this grant compression products that are not covered by insurances will be provided to the patient at no cost.
