Major step in personalized treatment — Thanks to a 2007 research grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, scientists identified a set of 50 genes that oncologists can potentially use to tailor individualized treatments for all breast cancer patients.
This year, Komen Charlotte is funding $1.2 million in local projects selected by our independent Grant Review Panel as those that will have the greatest impact in serving uninsured or underinsured women in our service area. The “Health Awareness Program for Immigrants” pledges to raise awareness and increase the breast cancer screening rate among Vietnamese women of Greater Charlotte, North Carolina.
“Mammography Program for the Uninsured” will provide education, screening exams and diagnostic exams to uninsured patients at CW Williams.
The “Breast Health Outreach and Advocacy” program provides outreach, education and screening services targeting low income women, particularly minority women in Cabarrus County.
“Project PINK” promotes education, early detection, and awareness of breast cancer as well as reduces the cost of treatment for uninsured/underinsured breast cancer patients in Gaston and Lincoln counties.
CMC-NorthEast’s “Breast Health Program” provides screening mammograms and diagnostic services, in addition to lymphedema support and services to the uninsured in Cabarrus and neighboring counties.
“ACT-UP” provides treatment and compression bandages and garments for women with lymphedema who are otherwise unable to afford them.
“No Woman Left Behind” provides breast cancer screening and advanced diagnostic services for the underserved and/or disadvantaged women in the community who do not qualify for other means of assistance.
The “Breast Cancer Awareness Program” provides outreach, education and screening to HIV positive women, a medically underserved population.
The “Catawba Indian Breast Cancer Prevention Project” provides screening mammograms for the uninsured and provides group breast health and self-exam education for women of the Catawba Indian Nation.
The Charlotte Community Health Clinic has a “Women’s Clinic” that provides screening mammography, clinical breast exams and breast healthcare education to women aged 19 and over at the Health Clinic.
At the “Healing Our Community” annual NAACP Health Fair in October 2009, underserved and/or disadvantaged women can register for a mammogram to be provided at Iredell Memorial Hospital.
“Scouting for the Cure” provides breast cancer health awareness in girls and their families in an educational, non-threatening manner.

The “Breast Cancer Screening for the Uninsured” program provides diagnostic mammogram services to uninsured patients at the Clinic, as well as a breast cancer educational component to the Clinic. This program was established to address the increasing health issues of the growing Latino community in North Mecklenburg.
The “Person-to-Person” program provides culturally sensitive breast health education, screening mammograms and diagnostic procedures to low-income minority women in Mecklenburg County by collaborating with community groups and local agencies.
The “Screening, Diagnostic Services, Genetic Testing, and Breast Health Outreach for the Medically Underserved” program provides screening as well as quarterly education outreach to medically underserved women in the community targeted for Latino and African American women. Presbyterian is working with community groups, faith-based institutions and free clinics to identify women for the screenings.
The “Treatment Induced Financial Crisis Aid for Patients Diagnosed with Breast Cancer” program provides one-time financial assistance to women who because of their cancer diagnosis are unable to work, pay bills, or pay for medication. Financial assistance recipients must meet eligibility requirements set by the director of the program.
The “Mastectomy Recovery Jackets for Post-Surgery Breast Cancer Patients” program provides breast cancer recovery garments for women who have the most serious, most invasive breast cancer surgeries, such as bilateral mastectomies or TRAM flaps. Women with these surgeries have limited range of motion and multiple drainage tubes post-operatively, making it difficult and uncomfortable to wear conventional hospital gowns or clothing.
The “Cancer Rehabilitation and Wellness, Strides to Strength™ and Lymphedema” program provides focused services to breast cancer survivors including fatigue management, lymphedema treatment, scholarships to Strides to Strength program, and referrals to physical therapy, nutrition and other support services.
The “Breast Health Screening Service” program provides screening mammograms for uninsured or underinsured women in Rowan County.
The “Rowan Regional Breast Cancer Wellness Project” provides low income women who are not insured or under-insured, with state-of-the-art digital mammograms.
“The R.O.S.E. Project” promotes breast health initiatives for African American women in the greater Charlotte metropolitan region.
“Project CURE” provides breast health education and screening to underinsured/uninsured women in Stanly County.
The “About Breast Cancer (ABC) Project” provides breast health services to uninsured or underinsured women of Union County.
