Circle Up

Circle Up has been one of Komen Charlotte’s largest Friends and Family teams for many years. As a group of friends with a single purpose, they do sometimes seem like one big, passionate family. Circle Up was started in 1999, when two close friends, Lynn and Bryn, were diagnosed with breast cancer only weeks apart. Their friends circled around them, so to speak, and created a team to support them and walk in that year’s Race for the Cure. For 12 years now, Circle Up has been walking in the Charlotte Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to fight this dreaded disease and to support their growing family.

“Circle Up and Dream Big” is the team’s theme for this year’s race. They are doing just that. The team created an amazing video for the Bust a Move Komen! contest. Make sure you check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLS-L3KPOqw. It has received over 1,300 hits!

Circle Up also created “Sing for the Cure”. The event is happening this year in Charlotte on September 25th. It is a beautiful concert that brings together 90 singers from Charlotte’s choral community with orchestral support to raise funds for the Charlotte Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Since 1999, Circle Up has raised nearly $400,000 to make a difference in our community and to find a cure for breast cancer. They are an incredible force and a fantastic example of what teams can do if they pull their energy together and work towards a common goal.

Last year, one of the women for whom this team was formed, Lynn Kennelly, lost her battle against breast cancer. This year is even more important to Circle Up as they walk in remembrance of their dear friend. At the Survivor Ceremony on Race Day, the Susan G. Komen Charlotte Affiliate will award the “Lynn Kennelly Impact Award” to an someone, who like Lynn, is passionate and tireless about making an impact and finding a cure.
